My name is Danny MacDevitt, but the students call me Mr. Mac. I'm excited to be teaching 6th grade Science this year. I studied Ecology and Evolution in college and have 4 years of teaching experience, having previously taught 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade Science. My hobbies are snorkeling and playing instruments. |

Nature of Science - Scientific Method, measurement, metric system, graphing data, experiments, technology, engineering
Energy - conservation, transformation, types of energy, heat, temperature
Ocean and Atmosphere - weather, climate, land and sea interactions, layers of the atmosphere, wind, ocean currents, the role of water in Earth’s systems
Human Impacts on the Environment - renewable resources, renewable energy, pollution, greenhouse gases, climate change
Cell Biology - bacteria cells, plant cells, animal cells, microscopes, cell reproduction, diversity of life, specialized cells, tissues
Body Systems - internal systems, relationships, circulation, role of cells in process, comparative anatomy of different species
Heredity - genetic variation, inheritance of traits, reproduction, animal behavior, plant reproduction, environment/species relationships
Throughout the year, we will discuss Crosscutting Concepts that apply to all disciplines of science. These include:
1. Patterns
2. Cause and Effect
3. Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
4. Systems and System Models
5. Energy and Matter
6. Structure and Function
7. Stability and Change
Required Materials:
-Two (2) Composition Books
-A Binder
Grading:
Assessments: 50% of your grade
Classwork/Homework: 25% of your grade
21st Century Skills: 25% of your grade
Late Policy:
Classwork, homework, and projects are expected to be turned in on time. Please communicate with me if you are having any issues so we can work out a plan. -Assignments that are turned in after they are due will receive a 10% point deduction for every day that they are late.
Absent:
Google Classroom will list any digital assignments. Check in with me in person when you return for in-class assignments. You will receive one school calendar day per absence (which is the day of absence) plus one school day to complete and turn in any missing work.
For example, if a child is absent on a Monday, the assignment would be due Wednesday. If a child is absent on a Friday, the assignment is due Tuesday of the following week.

-Wear lei to visit bathroom; not allowed first and last 10 minutes of class
